Limnos

Limnos is the eighth largest island in Greece. It lies in the north Aegean and more precisely in the Thracian Sea, between Mount Athos and the island of Samothrace. It is a volcanic island. Myrina is the capital city and the and biggest port of Limnos.

Despite the fact that there are no forests on Lιmnos, the island is full of fertile fields, where vineyards and cereals are cultivated.

What to See

The capital of Lemnos is Myrina, where you will get to visit a wonderful castle that will surprise you with its unique view. There, you will also find the Archaeological museum as well as the Religious Museum. The Metropolis of Limnos, Agia Triada, Agia Paraskevi and the Russian fort of Tsai will surely get your attention.

At the same time, as we mentioned, Limnos has a rich history, so make sure you visit Ancient Hephaestus, the Sanctuary of Kavirians and the Cave of Filoktitis.

Hephaestia is the oldest town in Limnos where there is a sanctuary dedicated to  the Great Goddess Limnos. You can admire the palace,  the baths and a Theater of the Hellenistic period.

The Sanctuary of Kavirians is also an archaeological site with a view of the Aegean that will take your breath away!

And finally, the Philoktitos Cave. According to mythology, it is said that Philoktitis was bitten by a poisonous snake on the way to Troy. His fellow soldiers then decided to leave him in the homonymous cave. It is said that he lived there for over 10 years and was healed by the miraculous land of Limnia. Going to this cave, you can enjoy its wonderful waters!

A Must- See while visiting Limnos is the Sand Dunes. This is an extremely rare phenomenon that reminds us of the Sahara Desert!

The Beaches

Without a doubt the first thing we have in mind when taking a holiday on an island, is nothing but its beaches.

The island has over 20 beaches, some of which are organized with sun loungers and beach bars with all the comforts and some are quieter and more secluded.

Among the most popular and crowded, are the small and big lantern, you will love the deep blue, crystal-clear waters but also the fine sandy beach!

Gomati Bay will compensate you with its unique view of ornate rocks.

Those who like sports such as windsurfing will love Keros beach and its waves!

However, if you want to relax, you can visit the beach of Karbounolakas, as well as the beach of Chavouli.

Local Delicacies

Traveling to Limnos you should try its wonderful local food!

The first on our delicacy list, is the little basket of Limnos, a fresh white cheese that is the most famous of the place. Then follows the melichloro cheese, which is hard yellow cheese, perfectly combined with flomaria, a traditional kind of noodles.

The island also offers a different wheat variety of which their bread is made, which is something worth tasting. Do not forget the local honey, in which the locals count many years of production experience.

Bars & Restaurants

Get the pulse of Limnos gazing into the sea while drinking an iced- espresso in any one of the island’s seaside Cafes. If you have a bit of a sweet-tooth try a waffle or a crepe with some ice cream on the side. Trust us.
